Walking into a Thai restaurant for the first time can feel like a lot: a long menu, unfamiliar names, and a reputation for heat. The truth is that Thai food is one of the easiest cuisines to fall in love with β it's built on a balance of sweet, sour, salty, and savory, and most of the best-known dishes aren't spicy at all. Here's exactly what to order, what to skip on day one, and how to make your first visit to our Henderson restaurant a great one.
What should I order the first time I try Thai food?
These seven dishes are the ones we recommend to guests from Green Valley and across Las Vegas who tell us "I've never had Thai food before." Each one is approachable, none of them require a spice tolerance, and together they show off the full range of Thai flavor.
1. Pad thai β the perfect starting point
Thin rice noodles stir-fried in a tamarind sauce that's sweet and tangy, tossed with egg, bean sprouts, and crushed peanuts, finished with a squeeze of lime. It's Thailand's most famous dish for a reason. Choose chicken, shrimp, or tofu β the tofu version at Thailicious is fully vegan.
2. Massaman curry β the mildest curry
If you like stew, you'll like massaman. It's a rich, gently spiced coconut curry with potatoes, onions, and peanuts, influenced by Persian and Indian cooking. There's cinnamon and cardamom in there, not chili heat. It's the curry we suggest most often for kids and first-timers. (Curious about the others? See our Thai curry guide.)
3. Thai fried rice or tom yum fried rice
Familiar comfort with a Thai twist. Classic khao pad is jasmine rice wok-fried with egg, onion, tomato, and a splash of soy β savory and simple. Feeling slightly adventurous? Our tom yum fried rice adds lemongrass, lime, and a little chili for a bright, citrusy kick.
4. Fresh spring rolls or crab rangoon
Every good first meal needs an appetizer. Fresh spring rolls are light rice-paper wraps with herbs and vegetables served with peanut sauce. Crab rangoon is crispy, creamy, and very hard to stop eating. Both are easy wins for a table that's still deciding.
5. Pad see ew β the "not-spicy" noodle
Wide, chewy rice noodles stir-fried with Chinese broccoli and egg in a dark, sweet soy sauce. It has zero heat and a smoky wok flavor people compare to lo mein. If you can't decide between this and pad thai, our pad thai vs pad see ew breakdown settles it.
6. Green curry β when you're ready for a little heat
Fragrant with Thai basil, kaffir lime, and coconut milk, green curry is the most "Thai-tasting" curry on the list. It carries a mild-to-medium kick by default, but you control the level. Order it mild the first time, and you'll likely order it medium the second.
7. Thai iced tea β the drink that ties it together
Sweet, creamy, and orange. It cools your palate and pairs with everything above. Ask for it with oat or coconut milk to make it vegan.
How spicy will it be?
This is the number-one worry, and it's easier than you think. Dishes like pad thai, pad see ew, massaman, fried rice, and spring rolls are not spicy. For curries and stir-fries that can be, you choose the level when you order: mild, medium, hot, or Thai hot. Start at mild or medium β you can always add chili flakes at the table, but you can't take them out. For a full breakdown, read how spicy is Thai food?
How do I order at a Thai restaurant?
Thai meals are eaten family-style: several dishes in the middle of the table, everyone with a plate of jasmine rice. A good formula for two people is one appetizer, one noodle dish, and one curry. For four, add a stir-fry and a soup. You'll eat with a fork and spoon (the spoon goes in your mouth; the fork pushes food onto it), and chopsticks are typically only for noodle soups.
First-timer tip: ask for a side of prik nam pla β chili in fish sauce (or soy sauce for vegan). It's how Thai people season their own plate, and it lets you test heat a few drops at a time.
Is Thai food beginner-friendly if I'm vegan?
Absolutely β and this is where Thailicious stands apart. We serve one of Henderson's largest vegan Thai menus, so first-timers who are plant-based don't get stuck with a single tofu dish. Vegan pad thai, tofu massaman, vegetable green curry, vegan fried rice, and fresh spring rolls are all on the menu, made with plant-based sauces (no fish sauce, no oyster sauce, no egg unless you want it). Mixed tables of vegans and meat-eaters can order the same dishes two ways.
What should I skip on my first visit?
Nothing is off-limits, but a few dishes are better as your second or third order: som tum (papaya salad) is intensely sour, funky, and often very hot; larb and nam tok are bold herb-and-lime salads with toasted rice powder; and anything labeled "Thai hot" or "jungle curry" is meant for heat-seekers. Save them for when you're hooked β and you will be.
